History
Reiki(Pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word, meaning Universal life Energy. In Reiki Therapy this energy is gently channelled through the therapist’s hand, enabling the client to relax deeply and facilitate healing wherever it is required. It is a simple yet powerful, non-intrusive stress reduction and relaxation technique It is said that 1 hour of Reiki is the equivalent to 3 to 4 hours sleep.
This is a very relaxing therapy where I would either work on one particular area in need of balancing or on the whole body. I use Reiki healing energy and hands on touch, where appropriate, and with the client’s permission. I work with the chakras to balance the energy throughout the body. As a client you would lie in a relaxed position while I work around you.
I also use Reiki as a tool to help remove emotional blockages that seem to manifest in physical tension in different areas of the body. The technique is non-invasive and pain free. One of the benefits of using Reiki to access the effects of emotional trauma is that you don’t have to tell me anything about the issue unlike some of the talk therapies. This can work well for some clients.
There is no typical Reiki session, no set protocol or length of time. Reiki can be administered by anyone who has training, which could be a professional practitioner, a healthcare provider, a friend or family member, or even you yourself if you have been trained in Reiki. A quiet place is preferable, but Reiki can be done anywhere, no matter what else is happening either around or directly to the recipient. Moments of touch from a Reiki-trained practitioner can bring comfort in an acute or emergency situation, such as the onset of the flu, or after an injury or surgery
At the simplest, most obvious level, it appears that Reiki treatment helps lessen the impact of stress, releasing tension from the entire system. Not only do you move toward your own unique balance in body, mind and spirit, but also, depending on the level of physical health when Reiki begins, the body's own healing mechanisms often begin functioning more effectively.
Can Reiki help the body heal?
There is increasing research evidence documenting the effects of Reiki (such as lowered heart rate, blood pressure, and stress hormones; increased immune strength), we have only broad theories as to what causes these effects or the pathways through which the healing occurs.
The multi-levelled, rapid response to Reiki suggests a complex process that engages many body systems, simultaneously or in quick succession, shifting the body from domination by the "fight or flight" (stress) response to the relaxation response, and supporting the body's own healing mechanisms. Some researchers theorise that Reiki's physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing effect is triggered on a sub-physical level, perhaps in what science refers to as the bio-field.
